Treating My Acne Scars: What To Expect From Picosure Laser Therapy and Microneedling
In this blog, I will be sharing with you the before and after results of my acne scar treatment, my experience and pros & cons of the treatment
For a little context, I have had acne since I was 13 years old (I am 28 now), and only in the last year and a half has my skin started to clear. One of the biggest things that helped was cutting out dairy, but I won’t delve too much into that in this post. That will be for another time.
Anyway, the aftermath of acne was of course some pretty horrendous scarring. I’ve had 3 sessions of picosure laser and microneedling already and they have helped tremendously in smoothing out my skin.
The place I’ve been going to for my skin treatment is a highly rated, family-run business called Skin Cosmetics. When I arrived, the lady at the front desk always asks if she can get mr a got drink. Whenever I ask for tea with oat milk, she always pops out to the shop to purchase said oatmilk. That is customer service right there.
Before starting the treatment, I was asked to wash off any SPF/suncream that I had been wearing during the day. Immediately following this I made my way into the treatment room.
The first treatment was the picosure laser. My clinician gave me some protective goggles before starting the treatment. The laser is loud, hot and uncomfortable. There were certain areas (like just above my lips) that did make me flinch. However, what did help was having a pipe that blew out cold air. After a few minutes the laser treatment was over; it was now time for the microneedling.
Firstly, numbing cream was applied evenly over my face. This was quite refreshing. Then a layer of clingfilm with breathing holes was placed over my face. The numbing process required 30 minutes to kick in.
What you do with this time is entirely up to you. If you are tired then you can just have a nap.
Half an hour goes by quickly and its now time for microneedling. My clinician does this facial treatment in stages, uncovering one part of my face at a time. The microneedling was a 6/10 pain-wise. Not dreadful, but very much unpleasant. The aftermath is a fair bit of blood, swelling and redness.
Over the next few days, the bruising rapidly disappears, and my skin looks smoother, more vibrant and ever so much closer to being completely clear. I’ll never know why I was blessed with terrible acne growing up. They took my confidence for the longest time, and funnily enough when it finally improved, I got a modelling contract.
The treatment has been absolutely worth the £300 per session, and I will continue going back at least once a year to subject myself to this discomfort again…
